Truth Or Sarah got to interview Derek Mrdjenovich (vocals/guitar) of The Big Time. Enjoy!
How did you all meet? Who plays what?
Well, all of us went to school together at a young age and knew each other but never really
hung out until 7th grade. I play guitar and sing, John plays guitar, David drums, and Dylan plays bass.
How did you come up with the band name?
I’m not really sure, me and Dylan were on AIM really late at night and I think I suggested ‘The Big Time Boys’ and he told me that was dumb and shortened it to The Big Time haha, thank god.
Are you signed to a record label? If not, what would be your dream label?
We aren’t currently signed, but I think that our dream label would be any label that would push us and help us to really get our name out there.
What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
On our old EP the songs seemed to be more about girls, but our new stuff is really just about a lot of the things that have been going on in my life. Its all the different aspects, good and bad.
What is your favorite song you have recorded?
Well, I can’t really speak for the whole band but I honestly couldn’t tell you my favorite song. Our whole new CD is my favorite. I can’t decide!
Is there any band(s) that inspired you to start?
For me, I saw a guy named Jimmy Mowery who used to play in a band called Like A Movie playing acoustic and it made me really want to learn how to play guitar and sing. As for bands, Blink 182 and All Time Low were huge inspirations for me.
How would you classify your music?
Besides horrible? Just kidding, I think its pop-punk but more pop than punk. Its edgy and upbeat, yet it still has the melodies and instrumental parts that can get stuck in your head really easily.
Who is your ideal audience?
An ideal audience for us is anybody that will listen to us. We don’t care if you’re a 12 year old girl Justin Bieber fan or a 45 year old man with a Creed obsession. Anybody who wants to listen to us is very welcome!
What’s your ultimate goal in your music?
Again, I’m not going to try to speak for the whole band but my goal is to connect with people and have fun. I want people to come up to me after shows and say stuff like, “Wow, I know exactly how you felt when you wrote Where I Need To Be.”
Do you have names for your instruments?
Not really, I jokingly call my Gibson SG ‘Mel’ sometimes. Sometimes we mess with John and call his guitar ‘Aaron’s guitar’ but that’s really all.
When can we expect a full length album?
We probably won’t be working on a full length for a while, considering we just finished our second EP.
Do you have a dream collaboration?
I can honestly say I don’t have a dream collaboration. Maybe Mark Hoppus or something?
What has been your craziest tour experience?
Sadly, we haven’t had a chance to tour yet.
Are you planning a tour for 2011? If so, where are you planning on going?
Yeah, we’re planning on doing a 7 to 10 day tour in July. We’re probably just going to stick to the Northeast though. We’re trying to go to all the states in between New York and Virginia. Keep your eyes open for updates!
Will you do a music video for any of your songs?
Actually, we were planning on doing a music video for one of our new songs called, “The Secret.” Its a song about having a secret and not being able to tell anybody. There’s only one person that knows!
If you choose exactly how the rest of the year would play out, what would you want to
Probably have an awesome CD release, go on tour, build our fanbase, and get recognized by somebody who can help us get our name out on a national level.
Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans?
Well, I want every person that has ever listened to one of our songs, came to a show, cared even a little; You guys mean everything to our band. Please keep supporting and encourage your friends to support and promote too. Also, I’m pretty sure our EP is going to be called “My
Life In Pieces.” The release date is set in early June so please keep your eyes open and don’t be afraid to come to a show and talk to us! 🙂
