You may have read about the big year Canadian band Sweetheart is going to have. Truth or Sarah caught up with Marty Zylstra (guitar and lead vocals) of Sweetheart.
How did you all meet? Who plays what?
Sammy & MK are old high school friends and MK and Marty met in college. MK is drums/keyboards, Sammy is Guitars, Marty is Vocals/guitars/keyboards
How did you come up with the band name?
When we were thinking about the name for the band my old car’s nickname kept coming up. I loved that old thing.
Are you signed to a record label? If not, what would be your dream label?
We are currently 100% independent. Our dream label would probably be one of our friend’s small labels. We really like DIY ethic.
Who writes the songs? What are the main themes or topics for most of your songs?
All of our songs are split equally. The main theme in all of our lyrics is love/loss but some songs are just about fun.
What is your favorite song you have recorded?
A song titled “Name and Numbers” from our new EP is my favourite. I like all of our recordings for different reasons and each song has a unique story behind it.
*Sarah: You can hear this song when you go to their page for the Live at Squamish contest.
Is there any band(s) that inspired you to start?
There are many bands that inspired me to start playing. The Beatles is one of my biggest influences but I love a lot of indie Canadian pop/rock and indie UK pop/rock. We also really love bands like the Killers and Weezer. All of us have very different but similar tastes in music and usually someone will bring in a new cool band to listen to. Sammy & MK are always introducing me to new bands that I’ve never heard of.
How would you classify your music?
Indie/pop/rock with a hint of dance & punk.
Who is your ideal audience?
Our ideal audience is a group of people who don’t care about things like looks and what kind of clothes you are wearing. Instead they are interested in having fun and laughing and singing along.
What’s your ultimate goal in your music?
I personally love meeting people and having people get to know our music. I love hearing from people all over the world that they are Sweetheart fans and I can’t wait for more people to hear our music. That’s what it’s about for me.
When can we expect another album?
The new EP “XOXOX” will be out in about 6 weeks or so. Then we’re going to put out another EP later this year!
Do you have a dream collaboration?
I would love to work with a bunch of producers but I really like supporting local Vancouver/Canadian Music. It would be an honour to work with our friends in Mariana’s Trench or even our friends Carpenter (from Vancouver). A dream collaboration would be with Dave Grohl. He’s a living legend.
You’ve opened for pretty big bands like Faber Drive and Marianas Trench. Do you have a specific tour that was your favorite?
All our tours have been amazing. We get along really really well on tour and seem to grow closer as friends out on the road. When we’re at home we get mad at each other some times because we just want to be hanging out playing music and playing shows. The Mariana’s tour was great because we got a chance to open for one of our favourite bands of all time the Stills.
What has been your craziest tour experience?
One of the scariest tour experiences was driving from Winnipeg to Calgary in a blizzard at 2 in the morning. It was freaky.
What is your must-have item on tour?
The first couple tours we did we packed everything! An Xbox and a TV and all kinds of books and stuff. Then we ended up just joking and laughing and listening to music most of the time. It’s really weird but we will laugh and joke for 8 hours straight. My must have is a pillow so I can sleep in the back of the van when I’m not sharing driving duty. Oh and Advil. Lots of Advil. 😉
Are you planning a music video for any of your newer songs?
We definitely are! Stay tuned on that one. I won’t spoil the surprise.
You guys are competing to win a spot at Live at Squamish 2011, where Weezer is headlining. Has Weezer had any effect on your style of music?
About 2 years ago a good friend of ours, Wheeler, asked if we would join his Weezer tribute band, “Wheezler”. That’s how much we love that band. We started a tribute band. hahaha
If you choose exactly how the rest of the year would play out, what would you want to happen?
So far this year is great! I just hope we get to play a lot of shows and people get a chance to check out our new EP and our previous LP we recorded. I’m looking forward to meeting new people and hopefully we’ll be bffs!
Is there anything else you would like to say to your fans?
We love you guys and can’t wait to see you soon! We have the best fans in the world cuz they really love and support us so much!
Video for “Shout It”:
Do you have names for your instruments?
I can’t believe we don’t! I’m going to name my guitar Steve. Or Dave. Or Mike.
Would you consider playing on a television show? If so, which one?
We sure would! Hockey Night in Canada!
What is the most unexpected song on your iPod/mp3 player?
Mine? Probably Alan Jackson “Chattahoochie” I love country!
Who is the funniest member of the band?
MK or Sammy. Both are hilarious!
Who’s the trouble maker?
MK. He’s got some hilarious pranks when we’re on tour!
If the band were a family, who would be the
(Sam or MK)
all of us and any point
What’s on your bucket list?
My dream is to play a place like the Air Canada Centre in Toronto or Rogers Arena in Vancouver as the headliner. It would be the absolute goal of the band to see a sea of people who all love our music and what we do!
