It’s no secret that The Lost Boys are fans of 90s punk band Blink-182. But far from being carbon copies, The Lost Boys infuse pop influence and throwback punk with Blink-inspired edge to create their own sound. “Sleepless Nights” has no shortage of high-engergy pop-punk songs in the five-track EP. Starting with the band’s unofficial theme song, “Lost Boy,” the band sets the tone of defiance and sass. The boisterous “Bad Names” follows with a long but catchy chorus. The anti-thot song highlights its aggressive lyrics with even more aggressive guitar melodies and drums.
“Wasting My Time” was released as a single, to positive reviews. With a simple, yet captivating chorus, the song resonates with many; its relatable lyrics paired with a fun melody make it the anthem for those who refuse to be brokenhearted.
The EP concludes with “DAY->FTL,” a long-distance relationship-inspired song. As upbeat and poppy it is, it is a fairly cute love song. The vocals are as sweet as they are powerful and the melody strikes as fun but endearing.
“Sleepless Nights” offers five distinct songs that join to make a cohesive pop-punk record. Taking cues from All Time Low, Blink-182, and Cartel, the band is unapologetically blunt and borderline crude in songs like “Bad Names” and “Lost Boy.” But they avoid being flat-out crass with their smart lyrics and attention to detail with their charming instrumentals. It’s a fun album that fits in perfectly with their run on the raucous Warped tour.
Make sure to grab the album when it drops on July 16. And if you live in the Ohio area, be sure to catch their set on VWT 2014.
