Interview: NOY

This week we talked to the beautiful songstress, NOY, about her upcoming record, her culture-filled background, and future tour dates.

Go ahead and introduce yourself.

I’m NOY, born and raised in Israel. I moved to NYC over 4.5 years ago. Ibegan my musical career at a very young age: from well known choirs and national youth groups to instruments and music studied. Later on, I served two years as the soloist of a military band where we performed all over the world.

When I moved to NYC, I studied musical theatre at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New-York .I got my BFA in performing arts with honors. I always loved the stage and my biggest dream was and still is to perform. I’m working very hard on fulfilling this dream and it feels great.

Why did you go with the pseudonym, “NOY”?

Well, it wasn’t a hard choice, since this is my real name. NOY means beauty in Hebrew, but other than that, I find it pretty catchy and accessible.

You’ve been singing and performing for quite some time. Were your parents musicians or was this something you wanted to do on your own?

I believe I took the love for music, singing and performing arts from my mom’s side. She actually used to act and sing herself, she was pretty good! She didn’t pursue a career in it though. My grandma used to sing too, as well as her father. I just couldn’t see myself doing something I’m more passionate about.

Describe your sound in five words or less.

Surprising, Powerful, Soulful, Charismatic.

You’re usually described as an “Israel native, New York-based” musician. How do each of the locations affect your musical style?

It is an inseparable part of who I am. I grew up on a variety of music genres and languages. I feel that my music was actually influenced more from the older soul American music and singers, such as Aretha Franklin, Etta James, Barbara Streisand, Stevie Wonder. It also depends on what language I write. I usually tend to write very mainstream music, and in each location it’s different.

You will be releasing your debut self-titled album this spring. Can you tell us a little about it?

It is very exciting! I’m proud of this album. Writing is a process. It represents so many personal life stories and experiences that are not always so easy to put out there for the world to hear. I think it brings something different and unique, especially since it’s very eclectic. I’ve co-written many of the songs with some very talented and well acclaimed musicians, but my favorite part of this album creation was writing the vocal arrangements by myself. I felt it was my thing to do. I got phenomenal backup vocalists and I wrote them tons of harmonies which added depth to the music.

Releasing everything I’ve been working on in the past couple of years, is definitely a very significant and important process in my personal and my professional life.

Tell us about your new single, “Once In A Blue Moon.”

“Once In A Blue Moon” was written by the phenomenal Rebecca Jordan and Berret Yeretsian. It’s a passionate song that a lot of people can relate to, the search and hope for someone who’s out of reach. I feel that the soulful hint of the music fits perfectly with the lyrics, what makes it so enjoyable to sing. It definitely helps the voyage and the building of the song.

What has been your favorite song that you’ve written so far?

I really love “Will It Last”. I’ve written with the talented Sophie Dupin. It is a very personal song for me and the melody really seeps into my soul. It’s my mom’s favorite too!

Are you planning on touring to promote the record?

Of course! That is definitely the goal. I’m very excited to go back on stage. Performing a live concert with my own music and a full band is a dream coming true. I aim to perform in bigger, known stages and venues and to integrate in the world music industry.

Can we expect a video for any of the songs?

Yes. My team and I are currently working on three videos that should be released very soon.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I‘d love to see you at my upcoming shows! I’ll be at “The Bitter End” on Friday, March 14th and at Rockwood Music Hall on Saturday, April 12th which will be my album release party. The full album is about to be released on April 8, 2014. There are constant updates on my website regarding music, press and concerts:www.NOYmusic.com. Other than that you can get my music on iTunes and Facebook.
