Interview: Makari

Makari all2 - Version 3

I got the chance to talk to the mysteriously-named prog-rock group Makari. The band answered some questions about their new EP, the band’s name, and the possibility of a music video. Oh, and Matt is clearly using some of the questions to try out his one-man comedy routine so expect a few sex and alcohol references.

Introduce yourselves (names, who plays what, etc).

Brandon – I sing for the band.

Matt- Guitar

Kevin – I play the drums.

Eric –  Guitar

Lindsay – Keys

John – Bass.

Describe your sound in five words or less.

Kevin – Sun tanning on the moon.

Matt – Fun. Complex. Sexual.

Brandon – Progressive, poetic, and moving.

Eric – Fun, funky and groovy!

I’m sure you get this a lot, but what does the band name mean?

Brandon – Makari is the archaic-Scottish term for “poet.” We wanted something simple, memorable, and relevant.

Kevin – We strive to write music that is equal parts beautiful melody and meaningful lyrics.

What do you think makes you stand out from other bands?

Kevin – I think our technical guitar work and Brandon’s voice.

Brandon – That’s nice of Kevin to say.

Matt – Our energy, our friendship, and our tasty licks!

Eric – I think we bring a new mix from to the table.  We don’t believe we take parts of other bands and make a “baby” like some would say.

What inspired the lyrics in your single, “Keeper?”

Matt – Kevin was on peyote after a week long sexcapade in the swiss alps. The song just kinda came to us after he had drunkenly written down some jibberish on a hotel napkin.

Kevin – Keeper was inspired both by dreams I had but also by a general state of longing and desire for guidance and safety. It is about me imagining the person who I missed watching over me because they love me.

You gave us a lyric video, but will we get a music video for the single?

Kevin – I wouldnt put it past us.

Eric – Keep your eyes open.

What was the concept behind your EP, “See Dreams?”

Kevin –  I figured the entire record, lyrically at least , revolved around subconscious desires and feelings that bled through into our waking life. This record was an opportunity to share our dreams on a literal and figurative level.

Do you plan on touring to support your newly released EP?

Matt – Eventually, yes

Kevin – We are currently focusing on many areas with regards to the EP, and touring is one of them.

How would you describe your live performances?

Eric – We have so much fun playing live, definitely the best part of being in a band.  We play as hard and have as much fun as we can for a small room of people as we would for a packed house!

Matt – Energetic, fun, dancy, PBR infused.

Kevin – Our live performance is a place for us and the audience to connect. It’s a time where we play  our music and show the audience how it makes us feel and that we are passionate about it. It’s a time for the crowd to dance with us and allow our music to resonate.

Brandon – We really let the music take us where it takes us, and we hope to grasp the audience and take them with us.

Just For Fun:

Describe your dream tour lineup?

Eric –  I think it would be awesome to play some crazy festivals along side bands like two door cinema club or circa survive.

Kevin – Now, now / casiokids/ brand new /local natives

Matt – Makari. Circa Survive. Copeland. As Cities Burn

Brandon – Envy On The Coast, The Dear Hunter, Say Anything, and Makari.

Which venue are you dying to perform in?

Matt – Madison Square Garden

Brandon – Whiskey A Go Go on the Sunset Strip.

Eric – I’ve always thought a house of blues show would be so awesome.  Always so much energy and fun to be at.

Kevin – I’d really love to perform in Tokyo.

If you had an unlimited budget, what would you want to accomplish by the end of this year?

Matt – Our own recording studio, an awesome tour bus, tons of new merch.

Brandon – Something for the fans. Unlimited budget I’d give out some shirts, book a tour, and put out some new tracks.

Eric – I think we’d play our music around the world and share it as much as we could.  At the end of the day we just want people to relate to our music.  It’s always really awesome to see someone relate and quote our lyrics.

Kevin –  If we had an unlimited budget I would spend all of it on recording more  music, having an awesome tour lined up, and putting out great merch for our fans.

Any advice for bands who are just starting out?

Eric – Just keep trucking, writing music and playing as much as you can.  Keep your head up!

Matt – Don’t give up on yourself or your dream. Trust your bandmates and listen to everyones opinion openly and subjectively

Brandon – You are not invisible. You will absolutely be heard.

Kevin – Don’t give up: take your writing seriously, don’t complain about shows with low turn out, learn from mistakes , and believe in yourself because you’re doing something you love.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Eric – Keep an eye out for us near you!  We can’t wait to make more friends.  Come say hello!  Whether it’s in person or on Facebook!

Brandon – Thank you for interviewing us.
